Who am I?
My name is Cindy Wilhelm, I am 22 years old and I am currently studying Modern History with a specialization in Economic History at Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Before that, I studied 2 semesters of a mix of political science and international law and I did some research internships where I also contributed to 2 books, including chapters on Cuba, Fidel Castro and Marxism.
I was born in Stuttgart,Germany, but I have the soul of a traveller. My parents are Russian and I love languages (I speak German,English,French,Spanish,Russian and a bit of Dutch)-this is the perfect basis for a life as a traveller!
The most exciting trips I have ever done:
I lived in Annonay, France for 1 year (2009-2010) where I did a highschool year. I learned how to be independent and how to stand on my own feet. Already then I figured out, that my life is going to be a constant trip- I am excited to call various countries my ”home”
I travelled to Tomsk, Russia where I worked on a Human Rights project. I developed my love for political issues and I started to be determined to make a change. For me, my perfect idea is to link pleasure and the fun of travelling with political and societal research during the trips- WIN WIN!
I spent one summer in Australia, travelling the East Coast where I fell in love with the backpacker life. There, I learned how simple things can make people insanely happy.
I do not need a hotel. I do not need fancy food, fancy clothes. We, my good travel buddy and I, travelled by train and we stayed at random’s peoples places (couchsurfing). The experience to be in touch with locals changed my idea of travelling forever. I want to see the reality of the country I am travelling in and not some organised fake perfect world which is constantly shown in the big ass hotel resorts to the tourists.
What is the purpose of this blog?
I want to show you the reality of Cuba (La realidad de Cuba). Our Western media is extremely biased and often, an unclear picture of Cuba is shown. As I do not trust any of the statements, I wanted to get a picture of the situation with my own eyes. And I want to share my experiences with you.
This blog is also not only a political/economic analysis of the country. Also, I am going to give some travel advice, share adresses of good casas particulares (private accomodation).
I would be very happy to receive comments with feedback or questions. Feel free to point out whatever is on your mind!
